The President’s personal lawyer just lost his high-powered D.C. legal team as a bombshell ABC news report indicates that he will cooperate with prosecutors against his boss, President Donald Trump.
Cooperating witness Rick Gates also canned his legal team right after flipping on Trump, a few weeks before the news became public.
Michael Cohen has faced a coast-to-coast legal barrage in federal civil and criminal courts ever since he was exposed setting up an LLC to make hush money payoffs to Trump’s extramarital lovers, which he then continued to use as an all-purpose bribery company in a truly astonishing display of criminal incompetence.
Adult actress and former Trump mistress Stormy Daniels received a mysterious $130,000 payment to keep quiet right before the 2016 election in exchange for signing a non-disclosure agreement, a deal arranged by Michael Cohen.
Cohen foolishly lent the $130,000 to Trump and recorded it as an unreported campaign expenditure – a rookie mistake that came back to haunt him when Daniels’ lawyer Michael Avenatti began digging around to find the key to freeing her from the NDA and allowing her to tell her story to the world.
Michael Cohen was the President’s true right-hand man for at least a decade, and it goes without saying that he knows where all the bodies are buried:
Michael Cohen, now with no legal representation [by] Stephen Ryan and Todd Harrison, is likely to cooperate with federal prosecutors in New York, sources said.
A source representing this matter has disclosed to ABC News that the Washington and New York firm, McDermott, Will & Emery LLP [which was] handling the case for Cohen is not expected to represent him going forward.
No replacement counsel has been identified as of this time.
Michael Cohen’s lawyers fought hard to stall the government’s review of the dramatic FBI raid on his home, office and hotel room this past April.
Federal judge Kimba Wood is overseeing the case, and out of an abundance of caution appointed one of Rudy Giuliani’s former law partners at Bracewell – herself a former federal judge – to oversee the review of 3.7 million of Cohen’s records which must be completed by this Friday.
That review isn’t going so well for Cohen, since it seems like he practiced the law just as little as President Trump practiced for his meeting with North Korea’s dictator, which is to say, very sparingly.
The special magistrate even rejected some of his claims to keep his communications secret with Trump or his other two clients Fox News entertainer Sean Hannity and ex-RNC finance chair, convicted bribe-paying felon and hush money buyer Eliott Broidy, according to ABC:
Jones reported last week that of the first 300,000 items reviewed, she had determined that just 162 of them were covered by attorney-client privilege.
She rejected three items that Cohen, Trump or the Trump organization had designated as privileged.
This is the worst case scenario for Donald Trump, the Trump family and the current Administration in the White House.
Michael Cohen was not just your run-of-the-mill threatening jerk and legal attack dog, he was a lynchpin member of the Trump Organization and involved in the Trump campaign.
If Donald Trump needed connections to Ukrainian billionaires or to secretly pay off a Playboy Playmate without reporting it on campaign finance disclosures, Cohen was there.
If the Kushner family wanted to execute a complex series of deals to acquire land on a contaminated canal in Brooklyn, Michael Cohen got involved in the shady deal.
Now, that Cohen is going to cave and turn on Trump, all of those secrets are falling into the hands of the FBI, the prosecutors at the Southern District of New York, and potentially into the hands of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
President Trump must be screaming at the television right now after hearing this news.
