As more and more allegations against former Apprentice host-turned president Donald Trump pile up, the real-estate tycoon continues to try and protect himself from scrutiny leveraging his position in the Oval Office against any lawsuits slung his way.
One Manhattan Supreme Court judge just ruled against that very defense.
“In Clinton v Jones the United States Supreme Court held that a sitting president is not immune from being sued in federal court for unofficial acts,” Justice Jennifer Schecter wrote in a ruling released Tuesday, according to the New York Post.
This particular defamation lawsuit was filed against a former Apprentice contestant, Summer Zervos, who has accused the president of sexual harassment and assault. Trump’s legal team has argued for almost a year now that the lawsuit accusing the president of sexual harassment should be dropped.
In the suit filed just three days before the world came crashing down around us (or, as Huckabee Sanders would call it, “Trump’s inauguration”), Zervos alleged that she and her business were damaged after Trump made derogatory statements about her in the wake of her sexual misconduct allegations against the president.
In 2016, Zervos held a press conference in which she described a 2007 incident during which she says Trump groped and kissed her in a meeting about a job opportunity. Trump and his team denied the claims at the time and continues to do so, but the accusations of literally dozens of other women tell a very different story.
Thankfully for Zervos, she has the law and one snappy Supreme Court justice on her side.
“It left open the question of whether concerns of federalism and comity compel a different conclusion for suits brought in state court,” Justice Jennifer Schecter elaborated in her ruling. “Because they do not, defendant’s motion to dismiss this case or hold it in abeyance is denied.”
This is a huge blow for the President, who is already fighting off one lawsuit from his ex-mistress Stormy Daniels and was just today hit with another lawsuit from another ex-mistress, Playboy model Karen McDougal.
It seems that the president’s decades of misogyny and adultery are coming back to haunt him in the bigliest way. No justice could be more poetic than for this serial sexual predator to be brought down by the women he exploited for his own pleasure and then silenced out of arrogance.
