Tom Homan, Donald Trump’s hand-selected acting director of the Immigration and Custom Enforcement agency (ICE), is ready to imprison political leaders from so called “Sanctuary States.” That was the message he delivered on FOX News Tuesday in a very clear and .
The acting ICE director threw the gauntlet at the feet of states like California, where a new immigrants’ rights law took effect on January 1st that prevents the federal government from turning local law enforcement agencies in Trump’s promised “deportation force.”
“These are uncertain times for undocumented Californians and their families,” Gov. Brown said in a statement after passing the bill, “and this bill strikes a balance that will protect public safety while bringing a measure of comfort to those families who are now living in fear every day.”
Homan, predictably, doesn’t see it that way, and he had some choice words for Governor Brown and citizens of California.
“Well look if he thinks he’s protecting the immigrant community, he’s doing quite the opposite, because if you think ICE is going away, we’re not,” he told FOX News host Neil Cavuto.
“There’s no sanctuary from federal law enforcement, as a matter of fact, we’re in the process now, I’m going to significantly increase our enforcement presence in California,” he added. “We’re already doing it. We’re going to detail additional enforcement assets to California.”
Before shifting gears, he added an old fashioned threat. “California better hold on tight – they’re about to see a lot more special agents.”
The threat wasn’t empty, however. Later in the interview, he added that, if it were up to him, it wouldn’t be just undocumented immigrants who should worry about federal agents showing up at their door.
“I think we should charge some of these sanctuary citizens with violating federal law. I think if they knowingly harbor and shield a known illegal alien, a public safety threat, in a jail and won’t give us access,” he added, then they should be arrested. “They need to hold these politicians personally accountable.”
“We’ve got to take the sanctuary cities on, we’ve got to take them to court, and we’ve got to start charging some of these politicians with crimes.”
Homan’s hardline views on immigration are well known, and are fundamental to understanding why President Trump tapped him to lead his assault on immigration. In October of 2017, he spoke at an event sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, where he said:
“I get asked all the time, ‘Why do you arrest somebody that has been here for 10 years, for 15 years in the USA and has kids? If we keep sending this message, ‘It’s OK to violate the laws of this country and … not be worried about enforcement,’ then we’re never going to solve the border crisis. … It’s never going to be solved as long as people think they get a free pass.”
His interview on FOX News, however, marks a significant escalation in Trump’s war on immigrants, and on states who defy his imperial ambitions.
