Fired FBI Director Comey just called out the entire Republican Party, and Trump will be furious

- Januari 03, 2018

The president’s indiscriminate war on the FBI and the Justice Department has been ramping up in recent weeks, as his concerns about special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia worsens.

The reality television conman thinks that if he can discredit the nation’s most celebrated law enforcement agency he’ll be able to convince a large enough portion of his electorate to reject Mueller’s findings, allowing him to cling to power like an orange rat to flotsam from a sinking ship.

Yesterday, Trump tweeted out attacks on the Clinton camp, the DOJ, and former FBI Director James Comey, who he fired in an effort to stop the Russia investigation, at his own admission.

Comey has been a cryptic critic of the president in recent months, shooting out quotes from his Twitter account that appear to be veiled, but pointed attacks on whatever recent controversy the president had insisted on stirring up now.

Today, Comey took to Twitter again, presumably to hit back at Trump for singling him out in yesterday’s tweet. The former FBI Director asked why no national leaders are stepping forward to defend an independent Department of Justice and FBI from the president’s attacks.

The question is presumably directed at Congressional Republicans, who have refused to take any action against an increasingly unhinged Trump because they still want to use him to rubber stamp more of their regressive legislative agenda. Trump is tearing down our democratic institutions and testing the very foundations of our country, and the GOP remains silent. They’ve proven themselves to be craven, partisan hacks.

Comey ended the tweet by quoting Martin Luther, father of the Protestant Reformation: “You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.”

Trump, Comey seems to be saying, would better serve himself and his country if he kept his mouth shut a little more often, or at the very least, kept his little fingers from tapping out so many tweets. At the same time, Republicans would prove themselves to be true public servants by speaking out more frequently and condemning Trump’s undeniably dangerous rhetoric.

For a party that has long declared itself the upholders of “law and order,” a phrase which Donald Trump himself used during the campaign, the GOP is currently demonstrating a complete lack of respect for both pillars. They must take action immediately, or be written into the history books as abject cowards.
