It looks like at least one of the witnesses who were called to testify in front of the grand jury called by special prosecutor Robert Mueller in his investigation of the Trump campaign’s collusion with Russia during the 2016 election feels much the same about the impartiality of the American judicial system as the President himself.
Trump famously claimed that he wouldn’t be able to get an unbiased ruling from the judge hearing the fraud claims against Trump University because of the judge’s Mexican heritage. Now, The New York Post’s Page Six is reporting that an anonymous witness called before the grand jury is making similar claims.
The witness claims that 11 of the 20 grand jurors are African-American and that two jurors were wearing “peace T-shirts.”
While Robert Mueller was reportedly not present during the testimony, “there was only one white male in the room, and he was a prosecutor,” according to the unnamed witness.
“That room isn’t a room where POTUS gets a fair shake,” he continued.
Given that the entire basis of the American judicial system assumes that all people are equal under the eyes of the law and that a jury of one’s peers can reliably and fairly be assumed to be impartial after attorneys from both sides of a case get to interview and cull unacceptable and possibly biased potential jurors from the pool, that’s an outrageous statement that has racist ideology practically dripping from its sides.
The persecution complex that Trump and his supporters are using to try to convince the rest of the American public of the unjustness of the investigation into their contacts with Russian hackers and Kremlin spies would be more believable if integrated juries hadn’t been permissible since 1875. The same people who cry for color-blind college admissions and an end to affirmative action seem to suddenly think race should make a difference when it comes to deciding legal matters.
The anonymous witness interviewed by Page Six is using a typical Trump tactic of claiming unfairness whenever white privilege isn’t the operating principle at play and using the accusations of bias as a distraction from the real issue at hand: whether crimes were committed and who committed them if they were.
Those grand jurors were entrusted with the power to decide those questions after hearing testimony from witnesses, their lawyers, and the prosecuting attorneys. Their decisions are based on evidence and facts. Those concepts seem to be completely foreign to Trump and his Republican supporters for whom partisanship is the only lens through which they can view the world.
