As the United States prepares to ring in the New Year, former FBI Director James Comey took to Twitter to issue his hopes for the upcoming year.
In doing so, he took the opportunity to take a swipe at the president, anticipating “more ethical leadership” and a focus “on the truth.”
Here’s hoping 2018 brings more ethical leadership, focused on the truth and lasting values. Happy New Year, everybody.

Comey was thrust into the national spotlight after he was fired from his post as FBI Director by Trump in May, 2017. The move was highly criticized and may even serve as the basis for an obstruction of justice charge in special counsel Robert Mueller’s ongoing investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
Despite having been fired, Comey nonetheless testified in front of Congress in June, 2017. There, the former FBI Director revealed that Trump had pressed him to end the FBI’s investigation into former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn.
“I hope you can let this go,” the President told Mr. Comey, according to a memo that he wrote shortly after his meeting.
The memo’s validity was corroborated by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.
Flynn, of course, was a primary focus of the investigation as it changed hands from Comey to Mueller. Mueller has since charged former national security adviser with “willfully and knowingly” making “false, fictitious and fraudulent statements” to the FBI.
The fact that Flynn only faces a single charge suggests that the disgraced former national security adviser has been cooperating with or has already provided Mueller with information.
Flynn’s charge and subsequent guilty plea comes only weeks after previous charges were levied against three of Trump’s former aides, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, his longtime associate and former campaign adviser Rick Gates, and former foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.
With the investigation rapidly progressing closer to Trump’s inner circle, justice will soon be served– bringing Comey’s hope for ethical leadership and a focus on truth and values ever closer.
