While the United States may have defeated Canada in the world junior hockey championship match by a score of 4 to 3, it was a chant that really stole the show.
In response to chants of “U-S-A” by the Americans, the Canadians answered perfectly by retorting, “We have health care!”
Battle of the chants
While Canada enjoys universal health care, the Trump administration has gone to great lengths to limit Americans’ access to health coverage. In addition to their blatant attempts to sabotage Obamacare in a petty political move, the Republican tax plan that was recently signed into law by Trump is expected to strip health care from 13 million Americans by 2027.
Furthermore, due to the fact that the tax plan will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion, Republicans are largely expected to target Medicaid and Medicare next in an effort to reign in the exploding deficit.
Per the Harvard Business Review, “For Medicare, this could include increasing the eligibility age from 65 to 67 or beyond (resulting in fewer covered elderly), caps on spending per beneficiary (possibly reducing covered benefits), or increases in cost-sharing that would lead to beneficiaries using fewer services. For Medicaid, reforms would likely lead similarly to fewer people covered, reduced benefits, and/or higher cost-sharing.”
The Americans may have won the hockey game, but the Canadians just reminded them who the real winner in all of this truly is.
